Cathedral Preparatory School

Social Studies

The social studies curriculum at Cathedral Preparatory School requires students to study World Geography, World History, and U.S. History in their freshman, sophomore, and junior years respectively. The requirement in the senior year includes the choice of one other one-semester course in U.S. Gov’t.

Electives in the senior year may include courses in history (European, Pennsylvania, and Modern U.S.), political science, economics, criminal justice, sociology, psychology, Vietnam and the 60’s, Civil War, and World War II. Courses are labeled as regulars, honors and advanced placement. Seniors are encouraged to take more than the required two elective schedule permitting.

The rationale for this curriculum is to help students realize how man and the societies of the past have helped to create the present, and that this study will help the student to envision the possibilities of the future. The study of other social disciplines in the senior year provides the student with a different view point of the same reality.

The overall goal of the social sciences at Cathedral Prep is to help the students to develop into active learners and independent thinkers. Through the evaluation of their learning outcomes, in terms of desirable behavior, will help them cope within today’s society.

With this in mind, the following broad categories of objectives are used throughout the department as attention is given to a specific unit.
