Reunion Weekend 2009
Cathedral Prep Reunion Weekend 2009 – “Welcome Home!”
Cathedral Prep Reunion Weekend 2009 was kicked off with a “Classmates Picnic and Open House” on Friday, June 24th. About 250 Prep alum from all classes ending in “4” and “9” gathered on Prep’s 9th Street lawn for a picnic. The rain held off and guests enjoyed a beautiful Erie summer evening. The school was open for self-guided tours throughout the night and guests could visit Rambler Retail to pick up a new sweatshirt or other CP gear. Alumni from the class of ’64 celebrated one of there own in an extra special way Friday night. Friends presented Ron Shadeck with an engraved plaque reading “To a Special Classmate, Ron Shadeck…A Tribute of Appreciation from the Gods of ’64”.
A dinner for alumni and their guests was held at the Bayfront Convention Center on Saturday evening. Guests were treated to hors d’oeuvres in the North Lobby, overlooking picturesque Presque Isle Bay. A sit-down dinner was served in the West Ballroom. Senior Drew Miller ’10 welcomed the alum from the current student body. Dinner was followed by a slide show, comments by Cathedral Prep President Fr. Scott Jabo, and entertainment by The Night Cruisers topped off the night. It was terrific to see old classmates reconnecting, and alum of different classes sharing stories of their Prep experiences.
A few informal awards were announced at Saturday evening’s dinner. Chris Hagerty, Director of Advancement, welcomed Robert Kubiak, representing the class of ’44, who was the eldest alum present at the dinner. He acknowledged Frank Chernek, the alum traveling the furthest to join the Reunion Weekend festivities. Frank and his wife Kathleen traveled back to Erie from Hong Kong! Lastly, the spirited class of ’64 was recognized for having the most attendees at Saturday night’s dinner.
Reunion Weekend 2009 was capped off with Mass at St. Peter Cathedral at 9:15am on Sunday. President Fr. Scott Jabo, Msgr. William Beibel ’54 and his classmate Fr. Fred Lukehart ’54 concelebrated the Mass. Afterwards, a continental breakfast, provided by Cathedral Prep’s Chef Frank Cirillo, was served in the Prep cafeteria. Alumni and families had one more opportunity to walk the halls of the school, flip through yearbooks and reminisce about their days at Prep.
Thank you to all alumni and their guests that “came home” to celebrate their friendships and experiences at Cathedral Prep. Next year’s Reunion Weekend 2010 will be held July 23, 24, and 25. Details will be posted on the website as they develop.
