2008 Athletic Hall of Fame Inductees

For the eighth time in school history, Cathedral Prep will honor their all-time best in the form of their Athletic Hall of Fame. This next class was inducted on Wednesday, November 19th at 6pm at the Bayfront Convention Center. Below is the list of the latest inductees, joining the 51 individual members and four teams already enshrined in the school's Athletic Hall of Fame:

Al Lubiejewski ’62 - a two-time All-City football player, Lubiejewski also made 1st Team All-American as well as winning the Thom McAn award.

Stan Brzezicki ’65 - one of the top coaches in Prep history, Brzezicki guided the Rambler baseball team from 1979-2000. In that time he led Prep to 12 Metro championships and 11 District Ten crowns. He finished with 357 victories, and amassed a .750 winning percentage. Stan also sent countless players on to college.

Tom Hansen ’70 - one of the best all-around athletes in the history of Erie, Tom won seven varsity letters in four different sports. As a senior, Hansen was named All-Metro in baseball, basketball, football and track. He later played two sports at Notre Dame before returning to coach three different sports at his alma mater.

Joe Cook ’71 - Joe was a three-sport star at Prep who excelled in baseball. Later went on to have an outstanding 29-year career as a baseball coach in Oklahoma, leading Bishop McGuinness to 735 wins and a state championship in 2002. He has previously been inducted into three other Hall of Fames. Joe died suddenly, coaching baseball, in 2006.

Shawn Dombrowski ’83 - one of the top wide receivers in school history, Shawn helped guide the Ramblers to a 10-0 record in 1982 and a ranking of third in the state. Dombrowski is still listed in the school’s all-time receiving categories and later went on to a solid football career at Boston College.

Jed Ryan ’95 - in the discussion of top basketball players in school history, Jed Ryan is firmly in the mix. The top scorer in school history, Ryan’s 1,926 points is 621 more than anyone else. A four-year starter, Jed led the Ramblers to the 1993 state championship. He later played college basketball at Penn.

Mark Tate ’92 - a complete player, Mark led Prep to their first appearance in the state football finals in 1991. Still holds the school record for most carries in a season and Tate is fifth all-time in rushing yards and third in rushing touchdowns. Played collegiately at Penn State.

1967 Baseball Team - became the first team in city history to complete a season undefeated. Finished the season 13-0 and featured four Prep Hall of Famers: Gerry Mifsud, Tom Hansen, Pat Steenberge and Dave VanVolkenburg.

1980 Basketball Team - likely the greatest basketball team in Prep history. This group, led by 2003 Hall of Fame inductee Tim Gore, went 33-1 and won the school’s first-ever PIAA championship.
