Burger King Classic

Nationally ranked Milton HS from Georgia put on a show at this year’s Burger King Classic. Shaquille Johnson, the top dunker in the country, finished the weekend with 12 slams in helping his team cruise to the title with wins over Niagara Falls and Jamesville-DeWitt. For the first time in five years, host Cathedral Prep won a game and finished third.

MILTON CROWNED CLASSIC CHAMPS

Milton has lost three games this year by forfeit. This past weekend they showed the nation that that may be the only way to knock them off. All five starters scored in double-figures as the Eagles blew out Jamesville-DeWitt 93-52 in the title game of the 2012 Burger King Classic. Virginia-bound Evan Notle led the way with 23 points. Division I recruit Tevin Glass had 18, Auburn signee Shaquille Johnson had 16 points and a dozen dunks on the weekend, Jalyn Patterson finished with 14 points while Charles Mann broke a 23-year old Classic record, previously held by Bobby Hurley, in dishing off 15 assists. He also had 12 points and no assists.

Jamesville-DeWitt was paced by Syracuse-bound Dajuan Coleman who had 21 points and Wake Forest commit Tyler Cavanugh who had 18 points and 12 rebounds.

Congratulations to Milton High School on capturing the 2012 Burger King Classic.

For the first time since 2007 Prep won a game in the Classic. The Ramblers captured third place in the Burger King Classic with a 65-60 win over Niagara Falls. Sheldon Zablotny finished with a game-high 25 points including four 3-pointer's. Matt Harris was huge off the bench, netting a career-best 20 points.

Round one of the Burger King Classic may not have gone Prep's way but the Orange and Black hung tough against nationally ranked Jamesville-DeWitt before losing 74-61. The Red Rams were led by Division I recruits Tyler Cavanaugh (Wake Forest) who had 27 points and DaJuan Coleman (Syracuse) who had 17 points and 15 rebounds. Sheldon Zablotny led the Ramblers with 20.

In the opener the top dunker in the country did not disappoint. Shaquille Johnson, bound for Auburn, had seven slams, 20 points and seven rebounds in leading Milton to a 76-55 victory over Niagara Falls. D-I future signee Tevin Glass had 17 points and 10 rebounds while Georgia signee Charles Mann finished with 16 points. A CLASSIC FIELD FOR 2012

The Burger King Basketball Classic will tip off in Erie on Friday, January 13th and Saturday, January 14th, 2012 at Gannon University's Hammermill Center. This year’s tournament features three schools that will be making their inaugural appearance in the event and they come from the states of Georgia, New York and Pennsylvania, complete with many top-ranked high school stars. The tournament continues to garner the attention of the top high school websites in the country, as MaxPreps and Hoops USA called the Burger King Classic the number one four-team tournament in the nation.

The field for the 2012 Classic is highlighted by two nationally ranked programs that come to town for the first time. The defending state champion from New York, Jamesville-DeWitt, brings the most highly ranked player to the 2012 Classic. 6’10 center DaJuan Coleman has been seen as one of the top five players in the nation since his freshman season, averaging 22 points and 18 rebounds a game last season, and he will come to Erie fresh off announcing he will play his college ball for Jim Boeheim and Syracuse University. But Coleman is not the only top gun for Jamesville-DeWitt. 6’7 senior forward Tyler Cavanaugh is one of the top power forwards around and will play next year for Wake Forrest.

Milton High School from Georgia will bring a minimum of four Division I players to the Classic, having won their state title in 2010 and finished second a year ago. The group is highlighted by 6’7 senior forward Evan Nolte, a University of Virginia commit. Classmate 6’5 forward Shaquille Johnson will head to Auburn next season, and also happens to be ranked the number one dunker in the country, while 6’4 senior guard Charles Mann will also play in the SEC at the University of Georgia. 6’8 senior forward Tevin Glass is still weighing his D-I options while a slew of underclassmen have already caught the attention of college recruiters.

Milton will match up on the first night with Niagara Falls. The Wolverines won their first 17 games a season ago and finished at 19-2. They feature some strong underclassmen, namely 6’4 junior forward Jermaine Crumpton, who has already committed to Division I Canisius. 6’1 junior shooting guard Ramir Burton is receiving looks from Cornell and Colgate while 5’9 point guard J.J. Wilkins is being recruited by Division I Hofstra and Missouri State.

The Classic will tip-off on Friday, January 13th with a first round, 7:00pm match-up between Milton and Niagara Falls. The 8:30pm nightcap will have Jamesville-DeWitt against the host school Cathedral Prep.

Making a return to the Classic for the 29th straight year will be the host Cathedral Prep Ramblers, a three-time winner of this event. Head coach Mark Majewski will enter his fourth season at his alma mater after guiding the Orange and Black to a District 10 title a year ago, their second in three seasons.

Prep is hoping to make another run this year despite returning just one starter from last season. Junior guard Sheldon Zablotny, who was the second leading scorer a year ago at 11.6 points a game, returns for his third season on the varsity. 6’3 junior forward Delton Williams, 6’0 sophomore swingman Matt Harris and 5’11 junior guard Dan Blazek also bring varsity experience back to a very young team.

Friday & Saturday, January 13th and 14th,
7:00pm & 8:30pm @ Hammermill Center

Friday 7:00pm: Milton vs. Niagara Falls
8:30pm: Jamesville-DeWitt vs. Cathedral Prep

Saturday 7:00pm: Consolation Game

The best possible way to acquire reserved tickets to the Classic, scaled at $25.00 for the weekend, is to purchase an Erie Area Metro season ticket, while supplies last. That can be done in the Prep athletic office beginning immediately.

General admission tickets cost $7.00 per night in advance for adults and $5.00 in advance for students, and start on sale to the general public today. Any remaining reserved tickets will also be on sale beginning on Wednesday, November 30th at the Cathedral Prep athletic office. General Admission tickets will be available on the same date at seven local Burger King Restaurants (all in Erie, North East and Fairview), at Cathedral Prep and Villa Maria High Schools as well as Dee’s News while supplies last.

No phone orders will be accepted, and no tickets can be held. Great crowds are expected, so fans are encouraged to buy their tickets early.

BURGER KING NEW TITLE SPONSOR OF CLASSIC

The top four-team high school basketball tournament in the country will continue to be played locally with a new title sponsor. Cathedral Prep and the local Burger King restaurants have agreed to a multi-year agreement that will see the McDonald’s Classic transformed into the Burger King Classic. The move ends a 27-year relationship of the tournament with McDonald’s while starting anew with Burger King.

"Erie is a Burger King ® town so we continuously strive to be actively involved in the community and contribute to making our hometown a great place to live,” said Karla Murray, Marketing Director of Burger King. “Burger King is proud to support this nationally recognized basketball tournament and all of the athletes who compete, both of which bring great pride to an already great community.”

For the 28th consecutive year, Cathedral Prep will serve as the host school for the Classic. It will take place January 14th and 15th, 2011 at Gannon’s Hammermill Center.

“We could not be more pleased with the arrangement we have with Burger King to continue not only a local but a national tradition,” said Bill Flanagan, Classic Director. “We are very appreciative to McDonald’s for 27 good years of serving this event but are real excited about the commitment Burger King has made to the Classic beginning in 2011.”

The field for the ’11 Classic will be announced in November. The brand new Classic logo was designed by Katie Hanlin from Creative Affairs.
