Cathedral Preparatory School

Guidance

The purpose of the guidance program at Cathedral Preparatory School is to support the educational/spiritual goals of the school by assisting students in understanding themselves and adjusting to the realities of life situations. While the program emphasizes self understanding and acceptance of personality and ability, it offers encouragement in assisting students to adjust to life situations. Students must recognize that they have the responsibility for their own choices and actions.

The complete education program seeks to promote early college and higher education planning and preparation. This is done frequently in Group Guidance Classes and through scheduled parent/guidance meeting nights.

Group Guidance is provided for all students the equivalent of 10 to 12 sessions per/year for all classes. Freshman and Sophomore Group Guidance Classes occur throughout the year, whereas Junior Group occurs during the spring semester and Senior Class group occurs during the fall semester. The focus of these classes varies from year to year, i.e. freshmen – adjustment to high school specifically Cathedral Preparatory School; sophomores – academic performance and career awareness; juniors – preparation for standardized testing, decision making, and college search; seniors – applying to college, applying for financial aid, and scholarship search. Various other teen adjustment topics such as drug/alcohol awareness, bullying, etc… are often explored as well in these sessions.

The guidance staff attempts to get to know each student through a personal interview. Each interview builds upon the information acquired in the previous year. They provide a basis from which the counselor can work to provide: pertinent information, further counseling, tutoring, outside referrals, etc… Individual counseling is available to all students on request. (Appointment request forms are available in the guidance suite). Parents, teachers and administrators can also refer individual students for counseling. A list of counselors, available by class, is provided below. Each student is encouraged to make use of the counseling staff. Prep also has a formal Student Assistance Program through which students can be referred to specialty focused independent counselors.
